Dying with Kool Aid and Vinegar on Wool yarn

I recently had several people ask how I dye wool yarn using Kool-Aid or Easter egg dyes.

This tutorial was originally published on the Etsy Street Team blog, which has since become defunct.  I thought I would repost it here for anyone interested in using Kool-Aid and vinegar to dye their own fun yarn colors!

http://www.etsyhcteam.blogspot.com/2010/04/dyeing-wool-yarn-with-kool-aid.html

This one I call "Bunny", and was dyed using essentiall the same process, only I used Easter Egg dyes left over from dying eggs with my kids.  Also, another difference was that I turned the oven on to preheat to 350 degrees, put the pan in, then closed the door and left the yarn to steam for about an hour.  Everything else is the same, and look at this fantastic, Spring-y yarn!  This will become a sweater/shrug for my youngest daughter.

Here is a copied/pasted version...

1. Soak your 100% wool yarn in a mixture of cool water, a squirt of wool wash or baby shampoo, and a 1/2 cup of white, distilled, vinegar for about 20 minutes. You may need to squish the water through the yarn a little to make sure it is saturated.

All during your dye-ing, make sure you NEVER rub the yarn or wring it. It will felt and stick together, and you will not get the results you want.

2. While the yarn soaks, mix up your dye. I use 2 cups water, 1 -2 packets of unsweetened koolaid and 1/8 cup (or two Tablespoons) of vinegar per color. The brighter the color, the more koolaid you want to use.

3.Squeeze as much water out of your yarn as you can, and lay it out in a glass 9x13 pan. Only one skein per pan, or you won't be able to get good saturation all the way through the yarn.

4.Pour your koolaid dye all over your yarn. You can be as creative or orderly as you want, but since you are using a pan, the dye will mix along the bottom, and you will get some really cool colors.

This is the bottom of the pan. See how the color is mixing along the bottom?

5. Cover the pan tightly with tin foil, and place in a preheated 250 degree oven. Set the timer for 30 minutes. Let it bake. When the timer goes off, turn off the oven, and just leave your yarn to cool. After a while (I usually leave it in for a good hour or so) you can take the pan out to finish cooling on top of the stove.

6. Hang your yarn to dry (I use my bathtub). If you squeeze enough water out with your hands, you can roll it up in a towel and press out even more water.

When your yarn is dry, and it has been reskeined (rewound into a new hank) you can see your beautiful results! Happy stitching!

Scrappy Longies for the Bitty

So this summer has been a long haze to me.  I'm now 28 weeks pregnant, my husband had pinky surgery to repair a torn ligement, and was home for 8 weeks, and now, finally everyone is back in school, hubs is back to work, and it's almost back to normal around here.

Now, I feel like I can devote a little more time to the blog and Etsy, while still being able to relax a little.

Here's an easy start to getting back in the blog...longies for the baby!

I've made about 5 pairs so far, and a couple of hats, but I'll just post the most recent longies for now.

First up, a pair of scrappy crocheted longies.  I single crocheted these, so they are nice and thick, but I used several different kinds of wool, so they are a little thinner in some places, where the yarn was a little thinner.  Mostly, worsted yarn, and an I hook.

Yes, we are having a boy!

Next, these knitted longies on Licorice Twist.  I do not remember the name of the colorway (I got it in a trade from Hyenacart forums) but they have a lovely blend of cream, green, blue and purple.  I am not a huge fan of the way they pooled, but I can't say they aren't original!

I have two more pairs coming from swaps, and hopefully, that will round out my wool stash for the first several months, anyway.  I am so excited to see these in action!  =)

Jungle Gent longies

These were a little custom order, from the auctions for Lucas fundraiser we did a few weeks ago.

I love how they striped up, and the colors are so beautiful and bright! This was my first experience knitting on Mountain Meadow, and it was wonderful!

I had one skein of colorway, and one of trim, so there was a little bit of tension when I thought I would run out of yarn, but the customer wanted an inch shorter inseam than I had originally planned on, so it worked out well.

I love rainbows!

These sweet little rainbow longies were so much fun to make, using up scraps of leftovers from another pair.

These are available for auction on Crunchy Congo Friday, April 20, at 10 am...don't miss out!

Lotus Wool Longies

Lotus front by s_gilly_5

This is totally not how I pictured these longies turning out. sometimes I envision a pair of longies worked up, then when I actually make them, they surprise me.

I love how these striped up on the legs. It seems random at first, but then you can see there is an order to them, and I adore order, almost as much as I adore letting the yarn do what it will.

These are for sale Friday, Feb. 17th at 10 am EST on Crunchy Congo...go check out the other listings we have up!

Have you been to T2B?

Have you been to Top to Bottom Baby Boutique (T2B Baby) in Omaha? I recently (ok like a month ago) entered into a vendor agreement to begin selling my woolies at T2B! I'm so excited! But to be honest, summer was not the time to do it. It's end of June and I still have two more items to drop off! I may just go straight for the capris and longies.

Anyway, they have a great selection of locally made vendor items, an awesome selection of cloth diapers, cd detergent, diaper bags, soft shoes, cloth wipes, mama pads, and so much more! To check it out, go to this link, and shop their online store and blog! You can either place your order online, or go to 2928 S 132nd St. in Omaha, NE, at the corner of 132nd and Center! Visit their Facebook Fanpage and tell them Gillyweeds sent you!

Here are a few items going to T2B today...

OOAK Happy Accident on Peace Fleece

This yarn, believe it or not, started out with blue, pink and yellow. But in the baking process, the blue and yellow ran together making this amazing orange-y pink colorway I call One of a Kind Happy Accident!

These are up for auction on Hyenacart right now, http://www.hyenacart.com/gillyweeds.

Shroom shorties!

What do I do when I watch Star Wars? I make these...

Just using up some leftover wool, and I loved these colors together! They reminded me of Mario Brothers, and so I thought of mushrooms, and this is what happened.

These are a newborn size and will be up for sale on April 1st at Crunchy Congo...

The Khloe Tunic!

I have wanted to make Khloe a spring dress for a while, now, so I just plunged in and started. I decided to write the pattern as I went, because I knew it would be very cute on smaller sizes, as well, and she is a 3T, so I began with that and worked my way backward. I hope to have the pattern open for testers next week.

It has a fitted bodice, that is meant to fit close to the body. Then a little texture in the waist, followed by a flared out skirt, and a ruffled hem.

The string straps allow it to be adjustable, and are also very easy to make! The buttons in the back allow for easier dressing, going over the head.

I also like that she can wear it now, with a long sleeved shirt underneath, but in the spring, she can wear it alone, or over shorts.

This particular one, alas, was too short. I ran out of colorway (Creatively Ewe's Chocolate Covered Strawberries), so I ended it at "tunic" length, and listed it for sale on Crunchy Congo. But now I know how much yarn I need, and I have already begun Khloe's Tunic number 2!

Adjustable Hat

So I was making one of Valerie Whitten's hats from ValliesKids.blogspot.com, and it was working out great. Until I messed with the pattern.

A wise group of knitters I know are wont to say "trust the pattern".

I don't always listen to wise knitters.

This hat is crocheted flat at the crown, so you increase until the hat is a certain size around, then you work in rounds down the sides. The brim is worked as a part of the last few rounds.

When I first began the hat, I added an increase row, because it just didn't seem big enough. When I got down to the brim rows, I tried it on. It was waaaaaaay too big. So I tried going back to the pattern as written (duh) and it was fine. Then I washed it.

Ok, you all know how wool grows when you wash it, right? Well, if you didn't know, here's a little fact about wool: it grows when you wash it. By the time the hat was "done", it was huge, again! So then I had to figure out how to make it fit...
Adjustable hat
I decided to add a strap across the front, similar to another of Valerie's hats, and add some buttons to the sides that would make it adjustable. It worked! I'm so proud of myself!
Adjustable hat
But next time, I'll follow the pattern.

Vacation Knitting, Day 1

I'm working on a pair of longies for Khloe on some beautiful yarn I got in a shorties for yarn swap on Hyenacart. It's from Retro Baby, and it's bulky Merino, called "OOAK Rainbow".

OOAK Rainbow

I love this yarn! It's so squishy and soft, and it begs to be petted! The variegation in the yarn is perfect; very little pooling, and so many colors...they will go with everything.

We left this morning on vacation, and there will be several times this week where I will be "blessed" (at least that's how I'm choosing to look at it) with large chunks of knitting time. I have three projects, and it's a good thing. I started these beautiful longies, only to realize that I only brought one skein of the yarn! So I'll get them down to just past the gusset, then I'll have to put them aside. More on the next project some time tomorrow, I'm sure.

It's a knitted soaker (from) the Freckle skirty pattern, and the skirt was crocheted, using Laines Magnifique in Beach Baby. I want to say it's BFL. Either way, it's BeautiFuL!

I finished a couple other things, stocking tomorrow on Bella tesori!

I am in love. The brighter the better, and this turned out just the way I had hoped. Yellow, blue, and red, and where they meet, a party!
